The Last Communion of Saint Mary of Egypt (Print)
From the painting by Marcantonio Franceschini, Italian, 1680
Bring this painting into your home and receive Communion with the great penitent of the desert. St. Mary of Egypt, a fifth-century sinner of Alexandria, was stopped at the door of the Holy Sepulchre until she turned to Our Lady and crossed the Jordan to live forty-seven years in the wilderness. Near the end of that hidden life the priest Zosimus found her and brought her the Blessed Sacrament. Franceschini’s 1680 canvas shows that hour: Mary kneeling in her worn garment, Zosimus placing the Host upon her tongue, angels holding the corporal and the staff. The work was later given to Pope Clement XI by the Senate of Bologna. Patroness of penitents and of all who begin again late.
