Bring this 1788 engraving into your home and kneel with the founder of the Minims. St. Francis of Paola (1416–1507) left home at fourteen to live as a hermit on the Calabrian coast. Disciples gathered, and he formed an order whose very name—Minimi, “the least”—meant to go lower than the Friars Minor in poverty and penance. To the usual vows he added a fourth: a perpetual Lent, without meat, eggs, or dairy. Louis XI of France summoned him to his deathbed and would not let him return to Italy. The print shows him barefoot before a rustic cross inscribed CHARITAS, the one word that governed his life, with a church on the hill behind and two cherubs above.
