St. John of the Cross | Linen Texture Print
Saint John of the Cross with the Crucifix and the skull of Adam (Print)
Engraving attributed to Michel Bunel, Antwerp, ca. 1680–1739
Bring this engraving into your home and stand with the Doctor of the Dark Night. St. John of the Cross (1542–1591), born Juan de Yepes, entered Carmel as a young man and, with St. Teresa of Ávila, began the Discalced reform. For that work he was seized by his own brethren and locked for months in a Toledo cell, where he wrote some of the Church’s greatest poems of union with God. The print shows him in the white mantle of Carmel, a skull of Adam at the foot of the Cross—the old tradition that Christ’s Blood fell upon the first father’s grave. An open book at his side bears the title of his Living Flame of Love.
