The Life of St. John of the Cross
The Life of St. John of the Cross
Fr. Crisógono de Jesús's The Life of St. John of the Cross, translated into English by Kathleen Pond, provides the complete biography of the great Doctor mysticus. Rigorously compiled from historical manuscripts, Crisogono’s biography gives a detailed glimpse into the life of the saint, giving the reader a glimpse of his sanctity:
“He was a man in body of medium size, of grave and venerable countenance; his bearing and conversation were peaceful, very spiritual and full of profit for those who listened to and talked with him. He had a deep knowledge and experience of prayer and contact with God, and to all the questions which were put to him on these points he replied with the deepest wisdom. Although he is small, he is, I feel, big in the eyes of God; so thin from the much he has suffered that I fear for his life. Something shone through him; a majesty beyond that given to men of this world.”
Fr. Crisógono de Jesús, O.C.D. (1904–1945)—Spanish author of several important Carmelite works, including Vida de San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús: Su vida y su doctrina.
Kathleen Pond (1898–1987), a devout lay Catholic immersed in the contemplative tradition, built her reputation as a trustworthy translator through meticulous fidelity to Carmelite sources.
