The Spiritual Doctrine of Fr. Louis Lallemant
The Spiritual Doctrine of Fr. Louis Lallemant
Father Louis Lallemant (1588–1635) left behind him an odour of sanctity which still survives amongst us. To preserve it, this book presents his Spiritual Doctrine—carefully gathered by disciple Father John Rigoleu from Lallemant’s instructions—plus a brief life account, based on testimony of those who knew him and notes from confidants like Father John Joseph Seurin.
Reduced to seven principles, it teaches that God alone fills the heart’s void; perfection consists of seeking God alone; purity of heart demands watchfulness over venial sins, passions, and pride; docility to the Holy Spirit opens reservoirs of grace; recollection and interior life unite with exterior duties; union with our Lord, especially in the Eucharist, is central; and the life of prayer advances from meditation toward contemplation. For those called to the interior life, it will provide sure guidance rooted firmly in authentic Catholic mystical tradition.
"Let us seek God; let us seek God only. He only can satisfy all our desires." + Fr. Louis Lallemant
